HOW TO STAND AND WHY

You should stand tall with your tummy and behind tucked in (pelvic tilt).  Keep your muscles firm (contracted) – you can do this by pretending you are holding a pencil between your bum cheeks!  We have found this is the easiest way to visualize the muscles that must be engaged.  Don’t forget to keep your shoulders back and away from the ears too.
IanYou can gain a significant amount of benefits by just standing in this position.
We have often said that the knees must be bent.  This is not necessarily so. If you are doing weights or stress exercises, then the knees should be bent to protect your back muscles.  What bent knees do is cushion or soften the vibration.  However, if you want the vibration to go through your body as strongly as possible and affect a greater percentage of muscles, then your knees should be straighter.  Of course if you want to soften the vibration, then the knees are bent.
Just try it for yourself - feel your lower back when the knees are bent and compare to when the knees are locked, and you will be able to judge for yourself. The amplitude of the plate makes a very gentle stress on the joint.
In this case, for a standing static position, the knees should ideally be straight. This straight knee position allows more muscle reactions throughout the body.
If one is to hold the pencil firmly you are doing a pelvic tilt. A pelvic tilt activates the three muscles of the pelvic girdle or pelvic sling or muscles of core stability. Rotating the body while in this position helps core stability, flexibility and balance. If one keeps these muscles contracted for the whole ten minutes your body will burn calories for one to three hours after the session.


T-Zone Protocols

This is an overview of protocols I have found effective for using the T-Zone total body vibration technology.
These are to be viewed as suggestions.

The intensity of the vibration goes from strongest to most gentle (speeds 1 to 20)

  • Start gentle and work down gradually (start at a fast speed and slow gradually)
  • The further apart the feet are, the more harsh the session (feet together is most gentle)

If you are ill or have chronic issues:  Start at #1 and over several weeks (every other day) gradually add numbers as your body feels stronger and more able.

If your body says enoughSTOP!!!

When your body says enough, increase the speed (gentler) and reduce both the usage time as well as the vibration harshness (the distance between feet).

Speeds above 20 are for massage (too fast for muscle response)

  • Helps relax muscles, move lymph, may be soporific, may promote sleep, use before bed

Speeds from 1 to 20 are therapeutic

  •  elicit a muscle response, build strength, tone muscles, and help restore balance and increase energy  

Geriatrics or fragile individuals i.e. those with a “named” condition

  • Speed 15 to 20 (gentle/near massage)
  • Feet close together (less harsh)
  • Gradually increase distance between feet
  • Time: one to three minutes.
  • Gradually increase time (be patient)
  • Gradually increase frequency of use (2,3,4, times per day)

Athletes

  • Speed 1 to 5 (strong & intense)
  • Feet far apart (harsh)
  • Time, 10 minutes (1 time per day)
  • Increase frequency of use (2,3,4, times per day) 

Everyone else

  • Start in between and vary speed, distance for feet, and frequency of use.

Holding a pelvic tilt while on the unit will exercise the three largest muscle groups of the body; the abdominals, gluts, and the quads. These muscles of the pelvic girdle are referred to as the muscles of core stability. Exercising these major muscle groups burns calories even after therapy stops.
 
By tightening these muscles while in motion, the vibration technology also retrains the “neuro-muscular connections” to improve balance while toning muscles.

Different speeds or frequencies affect muscles, organs, tissues, bone, systems, joints and people differently; vary them, experiment. Enjoy your new found health and mobility.

Whole Body Vibration and Knees and Hips

There have been many questions about the safe effects of WBV (Whole Body Vibration) on:

  • Strengthening the knees and hips
  • Knee and hip replacement implants
  • The prevention of knee and hip replacements

It’s important to note that in our culture we exercise in a very linear fashion.  Many people will walk short distances using only limited muscle groups each day.  If you look out your window, you will likely see a world of very even or flat surfaces.  Our bodies rarely get the opportunity to use lateral or sideways movements.  WBV stimulates and recruits stabilizing muscles in a friendly and gentle way, improving balance and coordination.

There is an old expression, “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it”…In this case if we don’t use some of our body parts, we will lose them.  This is the case with our knees and hips.  We are losing them with knee and hip replacements every day, partly because we are not using them.

The sideways action of a Pivotal/Oscillating machine is the most effective way of targeting, stimulating, and strengthening these weak points in our design.  There is overwhelming evidence of WBV improving bone density is astronauts 40 years ago or recently with studies from the Journal of Bone & Mineral Research Vibration/Bone Mass Density Improvement of the hip (Volume 19, Nov. 2004) and also the Berlin Bed Rest study (BBR) proved that 10 minutes of vibration training 6 times a week prevented muscle and bone loss in total bed rest over 55 days (Rittweger et al 2004 [3], Felsenberg et al 2004 [4], Bleeker et al 2005 [5], Blottner et al 2006 [36]).  It is unquestionable the WBV can be effective in preventing knee and hip replacement.

With people that already have had knee or hip replacement, Oscillating/Pivotal Vibration Technology can safely benefit your rehabilitation.  Physiotherapists, Chiropractors and other health care professionals have used WBV to help strengthen the surrounding muscles post surgery.  (Please note that prosthetic devices are not included in the analysis.)

With proper supervised care and a common sense approach, moderate Oscillating Vibration is beneficial after the implants have healed.  It is difficult to determine when to begin WBV Therapy due to the variables involved (age, weight, fitness level, other health issues, surgery complications, if the implant has bonded well with the bone etc…).  A minimum of 8 weeks is suggested.
